Day 10 of 30-Day Charity Challenge

Tuesday Tip Giveaway

So for Day 10 I did Tuesday tip giveaway again. For those who don’t know what Tuesday tip giveaway is, it’s when I choose a table that I serve at Biaggis and ask them what their favorite charity is. I then take the tip I get from that table and donate it to the charity that they chose. I know I said that I was going to try not to do the same thing twice but I got a lot of positive feedback, so I decided to do it every Tuesday. Last Friday I got a call from the Des Moines Register because they heard about last Tuesdays tip giveaway. This Tuesday I met with Mike Kilen a feature writer from the Register before my shift. He asked a lot of great questions. We talked a lot about why I started Give(3) and what I am trying to accomplish. After we completed the interview one of the photographers took a few pictures as I served my first table of the night. Because Mike wanted to get a quote from my customers I had to complete this tip giveaway a little differently. I usually like to wait until the end of my customer’s meal to approach them about Give(3) but this time I asked right away so I could get permission for the photographer to snap a few pictures, and for Mike to interview them.  Luckily my customers Nedra, and Donna were great. They were a little worried if the photographer was going to get a good picture, and I assured them that she would pick the best picture and to not worry because I don’t even have a good side for the photographer to get. Nedra, Donna, and I chatted for awhile about Give(3), about the Lutheran Church of Hope, and about our favorite charity which just happens to be the same, Meals from the Heartland.

It is my favorite charity because anyone with $1.20 can make a huge impact. Nedra and Donna’s tip equaled $47.06. I donated the tip to Meals from The Heartland and that is enough for 39.2 packages of food. Each package of food is enough to feed 6 people, therefore, their tip was enough to feed 235 people. I want to thank Nedra Markham, and Donna Bell for joining me for the Tuesday tip giveaway.  It was a great night I felt really great after serving Nedra and Donna and I hope that they enjoyed the experience. It was definitely a different day at work considering I had not told anyone about Give(3). I had a lot of explaining to do during my shift. First it was from management saying why the heck would the Des Moines Register want to come interview you at Biaggis.  Then it was tough explaining myself to my co-workers. There are very few things in life that I actually take seriously so I think it was hard for everyone to believe that I started something like Give(3).
Check out my interview with Mike in the Des Moines Register’s Iowa Life section on January 17th.  I will also link the article when it’s published.

Thanks again to Nedra, Donna, and Mike.
